“I don’t know. My mom says that I’m not supposed to talk with strangers.”

“Your mom is right. It’s not very safe for kids to talk with strangers. But I can’t really do anything to harm you. You’re in your house and I’m in mine. What harm could there be in us talking with each other in our heads? I promise that you don’t ever have to see me in person, if you don’t want to.”

“Well…” John said, hesitating for a moment.

“You’re really going to need help with your powers or they’re going to drive you crazy. Trust me. I know.” J’Embra told him, quickly.

“Alright, then. If you can help me, I guess we can be friends.”

“Thank you. That was a very grown up decision.”

“I just have one more question. How did you realize that I’d just gotten my powers?”

“I’m not sure I could tell you in a way that’d make you understand.” She said. She paused, apparently thinking about how best to explain it to him. After a few moments, she continued, “Think of mutant powers like the road in front of your house. As a mutant, you could say that I drive on that road every minute of every day. Alright?”

“Yeah.” John said, mind-to-mind.

“Well, to me, each mutant’s power is like a pothole in that road. So when a new one is added, I’m able to recognize it immediately. And, if I concentrate hard enough, I can tell exactly where that mutant is. Do you understand now?”

“Yeah. So you know where every mutant is right now?”

“Not really.” J’Embra said, laughing once more. “My powers are only strong enough for me to locate mutants in a ten mile radius from me.”

“What’s that mean?”

“Think of it as if I’m standing in the middle of a large circle. If you walk up to ten miles away from me in any direction, I can still find you.”

“Oh. Ok.” He replied. “So when can we start my training?”

“Not tonight. You need your sleep. I know you have school tomorrow, so we’ll end things here. Don’t worry about the voices. I can keep them quiet for you until you learn to do it yourself.”

“Thank you, Ms. J’Embra.”

“You’re quite welcome, John.”

In the following weeks and months, J’Embra taught John a lot about his telepathic powers. He eventually learned how to shut out the voices on his own. Not only that, he also learned how to initiate telepathic conversations himself. This was very useful at times because he often needed help with his homework and his parents didn’t always have time to help him. J’Embra was also able to teach him how to combat the various bullies he met in school, as well as what to do about the little girls who liked to follow him around.

As he grew more accustomed to his powers, he noticed that they seemed to be getting stronger. When he pointed this out to J’Embra, she told him that it was perfectly natural. He was learning to better focus his powers, so it made sense that they’d seem stronger than they were before. What she didn’t tell him was that she believed that he had the potential to be one of the stronger telepaths in the world. She didn’t want to take a chance on swelling his young head any more than it already was. She was trying to keep him from getting too arrogant, but it wasn’t any easy task with someone as young as him. She felt confident, though, that he’d eventually grow out of it.

They didn’t have much time for training during the school year. What with his school work, his chores around the house, and his recreation time, they had only one hour each day to spend on his training. J’Embra tried teaching him while he slept, by entering his dreams each night. But after seeing how tired he was walking to school the following day, she told him that they had to stop that method. So they had to rely on only that one hour each day to teach him what he needed to know.

Their training progressed, in this fashion, during the school year. When summertime came, they had a bit more time to train. So she was able to begin teaching him about the world of mutants. She wasn’t able to teach him everything because she didn’t know that much herself. But she was able to teach him about the X-Men, the heroic band of mutants who strove to protect not only their own kind, but the humans as well. Through her husband’s contacts, she was able to provide him with information on the various mutant powers that were present in the world. At least, all of the ones that mutant researchers had been able to document. Even though there were no names to go with the powers, John still found it fun to learn about them.

As for his telepathic training, the older woman didn’t want to take up too much of his summer vacation. She told him that she knew children looked forward to this time more than almost any other when they were going to school. So she said that they could have four hours of intensive training each day. John was eager to spend more time training, and told her so, but she was adamant. He needed his time to have fun and she didn’t want his parents to start wondering why he was spending so much time shut up in his room.

Several years later, John’s training had progressed much farther. In fact, by his eighteenth birthday, J’Embra told him that she felt that he could continue his training on his own. But, while seeming to exude a sense of embarrassment, she told him that she was very reluctant to end their psionic relationship. She’d come to enjoy their daily sessions immensely because, other than her husband, John was the only other telepath in their neighborhood. And her husband, Bradford, was too busy with work to spend time just talking with her.

To his young mind, John took this to mean that she was interested in being more than friends with him. As the weeks went by, he found himself thinking about her more and more often. He even began fantasizing about meeting her in person and becoming intimate with her. When he began expressing the belief that she wanted him in their later sessions, by suggesting that they start hanging out together, she was quick to make him see the truth. She reminded him, quite forcefully, that she was married. She also pointed out that he was much too young for her.

Through their psionic connection, she felt his embarrassment increasing steadily. In a effort to soften the blow for him, she told him that she was very flattered by his interest. But she said that he should look for girls his own age, instead of someone who was old enough to be his mother. John accepted her words and promised that he would behave himself from now on. Even though things had been settled, that ended their training session for the day.

Later that same night, J’Embra appeared to him in a dream. At first, he thought it was just a normal dream. But when she removed all of the dream images, except for the two of them, he understood that she was really there. She told him that she’d come to warn him about her husband. He’d found out about their psionic relationship and wasn’t very happy at all. When John asked how he’d found out, she told him that he was spending more time at home now. His business was doing so well that he was able to hire people to take care of the things he normally did.

“But I thought you were strong enough to keep him out of your mind.” John said, telepathically.

“Normally, I am. But he probed my mind while I slept. He’s not strong enough, even then, to find everything we’ve done together. But what he found led him to believe that I’m psionically cheating on him with you.” J’Embra replied.

“Why? We’ve never done anything sexually during our time together.”

“I know. But he found the session where you were coming on to me. You know the one where you thought I was interested in you?”

“Oh, yeah.” John replied, laughing in his mind. “Wait. Didn’t he see the part where you lectured me?”

“Unfortunately, he didn’t hear that part. From what he told me, he broke the connection with me immediately after you came on to me.” She said.

“Oh, man. No wonder he’s upset. But why are you telling me this? He can’t really do anything to me. Can he? I mean, all he can do is tell my mom and dad. Either that, or stop me on the street and talk with me about it.”

“You’re right. He can’t really do anything about it himself. But he’s hired a rather sadistic gang of psionic bounty hunters to come after you. You see, he gets very jealous about any man doing things with me that he can’t do. Even if that means just speaking mind-to-mind with another man. He seems to believe that, if he can’t do it, then no one else should.”

“Wait a minute. Did you say psionic bounty hunters?”

“Yes, John. You need to go stay somewhere else until this all blows over. If they catch you, they’ll torture you until you won’t know whether you’re coming or going. And, then, they’ll wipe any memories of me from your mind. This means, you’ll lose all of the training I’ve given you.” She replied.

“Oh, hell.” John replied, telepathically. He thought for a moment, then suddenly said, “Hold on. I’m going away to college in a few days. Won’t I be safe from the bounty hunters at school? There’ll hundreds of other people there. Not to mention the guards patrolling the grounds.”

“Well, that should help a little. But your best bet would be to find some other mutants to protect you. You could even try to contact Prof. Charles Xavier. You know, the leader of the team of mutants I told you about?”

“Oh, yeah. I’ll think about it. But what about you? Are you going to be alright?”

“Don’t worry about me, John. I’ll be fine. Although my husband is very angry with me right now, he won’t allow those bounty hunters to hurt me. The only thing that you need to worry about is making yourself scarce. Use the techniques I taught you to shield your mind from other telepaths. I also strongly suggest that you seek out Professor Xavier and his students. From what I understand, Prof. X and that Jean Grey are two of the most powerful telepaths on the planet. Along with their teammates, they’ll be more than able to protect you.”

“I understand. How long do I have before they find me here?”

“If you shield yourself, you should be safe until you leave for college. But you must keep the shield up at all times. Once you’re gone, they’ll have a hard time figuring out in which direction you went. I plan on misleading them as much as I can without arousing their suspicions.”

“Ok. I guess this is good-bye for now.” He said, with a touch of sadness in his mental voice. “Please take care of yourself, J’Embra.”

“Thank you. And you take care of yourself as well.” She replied, before cutting their connection.

That final psionic conversation had taken place more than three years ago. John knew he’d been living on borrowed time ever since that day. He’d hoped that he’d have more time to find someone to help him. He’d wanted to have at least four X-Men on his side before the psionic bounty hunters found him. But, apparently, that just wasn’t going to happen.

Even though he wasn’t much of a fighter, he knew that he’d have to find a way to fight his way out of this situation. Hopefully, the two women he’d been seducing would find the information he’d left for him soon and would come to find him. He also hoped that they’d listen to his side of the story before deciding which side they were going to be on.

He knew Jean trusted him completely, but he still wasn’t sure Rogue did. Even though she wanted him to dominate her, she had yet to allow him to take complete control of their encounters. She continued to maintain just enough power to satisfy herself. So he’d just have to wait and see how things played themselves out. He didn’t know how much time he had left to hide at his parent’s house, but he was certain that it wouldn’t be too much longer before they found him here.

“Can I ask you something, Bobby?” the young girl asked her date. “Why did you finally decide to go out with me? I mean, you never used to pay that much attention to me.”

“Well, I heard somewhere that you’ve had a crush on me for the longest time. I figured anyone that interested in me at least deserves one date. Besides I have a secret of my own. I’ve secretly had a thing for you too. I acted like I didn’t because I didn’t want the guys on the team to think I’m getting soft. They think that nothing but thoughts about football run through my head. Since they only care about the game, and not about being my friend, that’s the way I want things to stay.” Bobby replied.

“Why do you care so much what people think?”

“You know how the popularity thing works, Brenda. You do what people expect you to do if you want to stay popular. At least for the time being, I like being popular. It makes things much easier.”

“Yeah, you’re right. It does.” Brenda said, nodding in understanding.

“But, enough of this talk. I didn’t bring you here to talk. We’re here so we can make out like everyone else. Isn’t that what you’ve been secretly hoping for anyway?” Bobby asked, turning to look at her.

Brenda giggled softly as she looked into his eyes. Then, she replied, “Yes. I’ve been dreaming of the day when you’d take me in your arms and kiss me.”

As Bobby leaned down to kiss her, Brenda turned slightly in her seat to make things more comfortable for herself. However, before she felt Bobby’s lips touch hers, her mind went mysteriously blank. Then she placed her hand upon Bobby’s chest and pushed him gently away. Before Bobby could question the movement, Brenda replied in a strangely toneless voice.

“You need to get out of the car now, Bobby. There’s someone here looking for you. I don’t think they’re too happy with you. I’m sure you can find your way home on your own.”

Bobby started to question her, but a sudden sound outside the car stopped him. Looking around, he saw every other car at the make-out spot leaving. Then he saw a group of people dressed in strange uniforms who were standing at the edge of the clearing. He figured that they must be mutants like him, so he got out of the car and allowed Brenda to leave like everyone else. He started to question the mutants when one of the female members of the group stepped forward and spoke.

“Hello, Paige. My name is Jean Grey. We represent a group of mutants whose goal is to protect both human and mutants from those who would harm them. Mostly we try to make their world safe for both races and strive to bring them together to live as one. We’d like to offer you and your brother a home with us.”

“W-wait. H-how did you know that I’m a girl?” Paige asked. “And were you the one who told Brenda that I’m a mutant?”

“I know you’re a girl because I’m a telepath and I read your mind. And, yes, I told her that you’re a mutant. But don’t worry. Neither she nor anyone else here will remember that you’re a mutant. Well, except for you, you’re brother, and the four of us, that is. Brenda will know that a mutant played that prank on her, but she won’t know who that mutant was.” Jean said.

“M-my brother?”

“Yes, your brother. You know, the young man hiding in the bushes to your right? The same young man that you brought here to watch as you exacted your revenge upon the girl who’s been making fun of you at school.”

The young woman, who still looked like the star of the high school football team, glanced briefly at the bushes to her right before returning her gaze to the woman before her. She started to say something, but a sudden explosion caused her to look quickly back at the bushes. Her eyes widened in shock as she saw her brother flying toward her through the air. She barely had time to turn toward him and relax her muscles, like he’d taught her, when he collided with her. Instead of being hurt, she was lifted off of the ground and carried away into the night sky by her older brother.

The X-Men reacted immediately to this unforeseen event. They turned and ran as fast as they could back to the Blackbird. Once inside, Jean used the onboard Cerebro unit to track the two young mutants. Upon finding them, she quickly calculated their flight path and instructed Cyclops on which way to go. If the two siblings kept to their current path, the telepath knew, they would take shelter in a small cave in the nearby mountain.

Not knowing the terrain that well, the X-Men knew that it’d be better to fly there in the Blackbird. They knew that there was another clearing that was much closer to the cave where they could land the stealth plane. They only hoped that Paige and her brother would be more inclined to listen to them once they got there.

“Who were those people?” Sam Guthrie asked his sister, breathing heavily and staring out into the night from the cave they’d chosen to hide in.

“I’m not sure.” Paige replied, sitting against the rough stone wall with her arms wrapped tight around her legs.

She was still in the form of the football player as the time limit on her shapeshifting ability hadn’t ended yet. She usually had one hour before it ended and she had to shed her skin to return to her original form. It was a bit annoying that she could only change her form for one hour, but she hadn’t yet figured out how to extend that time limit. As she joined her brother in staring out of the cave entrance, she idly wondered if she’d ever learn how to better control her abilities. Although she loved being a mutant, she knew that she was nowhere good enough to protect either Sam or herself against other mutants.

An involuntary shudder ran down her spine and she huddled herself into an even tighter ball against the cave wall. Sam heard the slight movement and turned to look at her. Upon seeing the look on her face, he moved over to her and hugged her tight. Paige allowed him a few moments of acting the part of the protective older brother before pushing him gently away. As much as she appreciated his show of love and compassion, she really preferred it when he didn’t treat her like the lost little girl who needs a man to protect her. She was more than capable of taking care of herself and they both knew it.

Sam smiled gently as she pushed him away, and then glanced back out of the cave entrance with a worried look on his face. They both listened for several minutes, but neither of them could hear anything other than the normal night time sounds. Sam looked back at his sister and shrugged, and then he sat down next to her and tried to relax. Although they didn’t know if those other mutants would be able to find them there, they both felt that it was a good idea to remain where they were for the time being.

“So, what do you think they wanted with us?” Sam asked, after several more uneventful moments.

“Well, it could be that they know what we’ve been doing. It’s like they said. They want humans and mutants to get along.” She said. Then she turned her head to look at him. “I don’t think our pranks are helping our kind any.”

“Hey, you were the one who wanted to take revenge on those people. I wanted to let it go.”

“I already told you. It’s not revenge. We’re teaching them a lesson. It’s called karma.”

“Yeah, well. It still sounds like revenge to me.”

“Your sister’s right, Sam.” A new voice said, making them both jump. “There’s a subtle line between karmic justice and revenge.”

They looked around for a few minutes, but neither of them could figure out who had spoken to them. Then they both scrambled to their feet as the person who spoke came down from the ceiling. Actually, as they looked up at him, he simply stood up. It was as if his feet were glued to the ceiling above them. He chuckled at their surprise, and then pulled his feet away from the rough stone. Like an acrobat in the circus, he executed a flip to land upon his two-toed feet.

As she looked back at his face, she noticed that the exposed parts of his skin were covered in a fine, dark blue fur. He had indigo hair, shining yellow eyes without any visible pupils, and hands that both had only two fingers and a thumb on them. They could also see, as it flicked from side to side behind him, that he had a long, thin demon-like tail. He had an athletic-type body and he was just a bit shorter than Sam, who stood six feet tall.
